2021 Winter Essentials for Every Bub

With winter in full swing and having us reaching for our blankets, it’s easy to fall into the trap of wanting to stay indoors with your new baby, especially if you’re first-time parents.

While this is all well and good, keeping inside a baby bubble for the long-term does pose some wellbeing challenges, so it’s always recommended to ease your way back into the world around you when the time is right. However, as the temperature drops, this becomes more of a challenge. In this article, we’re bringing you some easy essentials to help keep your bub cosy and warm when that chilly weather rolls around.

Must-have newborn products to keep handy this winter

Blankets

A warm blanket is most definitely a requirement for cold nights and wintery pram rides when you need to get out of the house. With so many styles and adorable options available, the process of picking just one is probably the biggest challenge of all. Right now, we’re loving our gorgeous personalised blankets – perfect for your little bub or as a gift for another. A keepsake like this is one that lasts far beyond the early years in their lives, remaining a keepsake well into the future. (Oh, and it keeps them super warm and snuggly.)

Did somebody say tummy time?

As parents, we constantly think about our baby’s development and if we are doing enough for them. A playmat is an easy essential to keep on hand and can be used both indoors and outdoors. For bubs that need this tummy time the most, we recommend using them a few times a day. Place in your nursery or pop it into your nappy bag for trips to your local park.

Note: It is important to go outside, even in the chilly weather. Babies need support in regulating and recognising the difference between night and day. A playmat – like the Leaves Playmat –  can be taken out whenever you have a spare moment, keeping your bubs safe and sound in the ‘Great Outdoors’.

Onesies

After bibs, onesies are the next item that is on a never-ending washing rotation. Because it’s in constant contact with newborn skin, having quality and breathable fabric is a must, along with a desire for the clothing to be both ethically made and from sustainable materials. Earthy colours, like our organic full-length onesie, make a beautiful addition to these adorable wardrobes.

Top tip: Purchase a bunch of onesies with zips – these are a lifesaver during frequent nappy changing, and you’ll thank yourself later.

Swaddle bags

With the cooler weather comes the need for baby's swaddles to be upgraded to a TOG rating for warmth. The 2.5 TOG can be used in room temperatures between 17 – 23 °C and with no blankets needed in the bassinet or cot, this makes it a safe sleeping area. The ErgoPouch Cocoon Swaddle is a definite must-have, as it is designed to include both arms-in and arms-out for when your little one is ready to roll. They often start to roll over as early as four months, so having an option to extend the life of the swaddle when this occurs is an excellent addition.

TLDR? Get a head start this winter with personalised blankets and a bunch of other essentials – like a playmat onesie or swaddle – to get out and about, despite Australia’s often erratic conditions.
